This project involved long-term skin trials to assess the textural properties of Oat® COM and its effects on various skin types.
Oat COM Skin Trial 2
Project Overview
KEY POINTS
An independent research facility conducted a single placement study:
- Participants: 53 female participants, all over 40 years old, with normal, dry, and sensitive skin types equally represented.
- Application: A single daily application of the test cream.
- Assessment Periods:
- Short-term: After 6, 12, and 24 hours (Trial 2)
- Long-term: After 30, 60, and 90 days (Trial 3)
- Test Formulation: A market-relevant passive base formulation with a 3% Oat® COM extruded Colloidal Oatmeal inclusion.
- Cohort Grouping: Skin types were assessed as a combined cohort, as well as individual cohorts.
Key Findings
Upon initial application, all test subjects reported positive responses regarding skin feel, lack of greasiness, and moisturisation. Over 93% agreed or strongly agreed that the product left their skin feeling soft after use.
The post-absorption moisturisation responses were highly positive, especially for a single application, strongly indicating Oat COM’s ability to improve skin feel and reduce greasiness in formulations.
Sustained Anti-Ageing Activity Across All Skin Types
The combined cohort trial aimed to demonstrate Oat® COM’s anti-ageing capabilities across all skin types. Subjects assessed the product’s moisturising, soothing, nourishing, and skin feel properties.
The results showed remarkable rapid and sustained anti-ageing effects at a low inclusion rate of 3% Oat® COM. While impressive after 30 days, these benefits remained consistently high throughout the entire 90-day period, confirming Oat® COM as an excellent long-term skincare active that moisturises, soothes, and nourishes all skin types.
Moisturisation effects on dry skin
For individuals with dry skin, the need for continual and consistent moisturisation is a key challenge. The participants were asked whether they agreed that the product left their skin feeling moisturised, soft, soothed and nourished.
Subjects with dry skin instantly recognised the moisturising effects, which were sustained throughout the entire ninety-day period.
Long-term and sustained moisturising effects are rare, especially for dry skin conditions often accompanied by redness or flaking, making the perceived soothing effects particularly encouraging.
The results position Oat® COM as an ideal moisturiser for alleviating the symptoms of dry skin conditions.
Soothing and moisturising effect on sensitive skin
Sensitive skin presents a significant challenge due to its broad definition of mild to more chronic conditions and tendency for flare-ups.
Subjects were asked whether they agreed the product moisturised, soothed and left their skin feeling soft. The results for this demographic were encouraging, with subjects agreeing that the product moisturised, soothed, and left their skin feeling soft.
The consistency of results over this longer period for sensitive skin confirms Oat® COM as a reliable soothing and moisturising agent. The combined results for dry and sensitive skin cohorts highlight Oat® COM’s versatility as an anti-ageing ingredient.
The study was extended for a further 90 days to assess whether benefits could be sustained and to investigate the overall anti-aging efficacy of Oat® COM over 30, 60 and 90 days.
